Chapter Eight

Gabriel stared at the unanswered messages on his phone, six in total, all to her. He poured a stiff drink and knocked it back in one before pouring another. This wouldn’t do. It was not the way it was supposed to go. There was a deep burn of something in the pit of his stomach. Rage, jealousy—something like that.

Thoughts of the evenings they had spent together only a few days ago made his cock twitch. She had wanted him so much and she had tasted so good. It had all been worth it. All the dreams that he’d sent her. All the waiting.

So why the fuck isn’t she answering my calls?

He thought of her quivering beneath his touch, her pleading pants of “Please, Gabriel,” and of her screaming his name as he’d made her come, time after time. He poured another drink and knocked it back. What is going on?

He had been to her house for the last two evenings, though he knew it was useless—she wasn’t there. He’d guessed that she’d probably stayed over at her friend’s house in an attempt to avoid him. As much as he needed to see her, it was best not to go to someone else’s house at this stage—she knew what he was, after all.

His phone buzzed, and he picked up before it had a chance to ring.

“Mr. Langston.” His stomach dropped as his PA’s voice hit his ear.

“Yes,” he snapped.

“Sorry if I’ve caught you at a bad time.”

“No, it’s fine,” he said, pinching the bridge of his nose.

“It’s just that you said I should get back to you as soon as the papers were ready.”

“Yes, yes of course. Thank you, Catherine.”

“Of course, Mr Langston.”

Gabriel slammed his phone onto the table and pulled at his collar. It was no use, he’d have to go looking for Olivia today. He checked his watch. 16.46. If he left now, he might catch her if she was at the office. He tucked his phone in his jacket, grabbed his sunglasses and set off to find her.

Less than a half hour later, Gabriel was outside GHB Publications where a receptionist pressed him for information before the door had even closed.

“Can I help you, sir?” she asked, her baby blues tracing up and down his body. It was nothing he wasn’t used to after the centuries. He smiled his most beguiling smile—there was more than one way to get what he wanted.

“I certainly hope so.” Her cheeks flushed, and he smiled at the effect he was having. “I’m here to see Olivia Hargreaves.”

“Of course, do you have an appointment?”

“No,” he said. “It’s more of a social call.”

“Oh,” she said, her flat smile giving away her obvious disappointment. “Just let me check.”

“So, she’s here then?” Anger swirled through him, tinged with some relief, but he pressed it down. He couldn’t let his dark side emerge.

“Yes, but she’s just back from a conference. She’s been out of town for a few days…”

Gabriel grinned, and relief flooded over him. She had been away on business herself.
